What types of tests will I receive?

A lung cancer diagnosis is often made based on a patient’s symptoms, your health history and risk factors, a doctor’s physical exam and the results of different tests, scans and procedures. There are many tests that may be used to diagnose lung cancer, and you can work with your doctor to determine the most appropriate tests for you since not all tests may be recommended. These tests can play a role in diagnosing, staging and determining the most appropriate treatment option.

Routine blood testing can’t detect lung cancer, but can help you and your healthcare team get a sense of your overall health and may be used to identify genetic mutations in people diagnosed with lung cancer, but are not used to diagnose lung cancer.

There are different tests that may be used to diagnose lung cancer, which include examining lung cells in a lab. Cells may be taken from lung secretions, fluid in the area around the lung or suspicious mass using a needle or surgery (biopsy).
