Are there different types of Myeloma?
There are two types of myeloma:
- Active myeloma (or symptomatic) causes symptoms and/or affects your organs and
should be treated. A few symptoms include, but are not limited to: bone pain, frequent
infections and/or fatigue. Lab test results and/or symptoms you experience can help you and your
healthcare team determine treatment options and next steps.
- Smoldering myeloma (asymptomatic) means that the disease is not causing any
signs or symptoms. People with smoldering myeloma have M-protein in their blood and plasma cells
in their bone marrow, but this is usually at lower levels than active myeloma. You will be
monitored frequently for signs and symptoms since smoldering myeloma may progress into active
multiple myeloma.
